The penny is a extra large copy of a 1965 copper coin, and was part of the collection of over-sized coins originally placed at The Big Nickel Park. The Big Nickel Park was created by Ted Szilva to celebrate Canada’s Centennial year, and was inspired by the metal mining around the Sudbury area. The park and it’s coins were a tourist attraction until they fell out of favour, were removed and eventually sold off for scrap. Rumours have it that collectors bought the coins, but all we know is that the big nickel is still standing but the other half dozens coins have disappeared.
