Welcome Salish! Canada’s newest apple was just introduced after decades of traditional cross-pollination methods, development and testing. The Salish originates from a cross between ‘Splendour’ and ‘Gala’ varieties of appes made in 1981 at AAFC’s Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre (PARC) in Summerland, British Columbia. The apple is tangy, juicy and very crisp and we should all be on the lookout for them in select stores near Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, but perhaps the rest of us are going to have to wait for increased production over the next few years. Here is the [official news release which contains some interesting details about the Salish and apple development, cultivation and industry in general.](http://www.agr.gc.ca/cb/index_e.php?s1=n&s2=2012&page=n121013)
