Arnprior and District Museum Collection: 1970.28.06
This letter c 1895, from Dontigny and Hughton, woolen manufacturers, to J. & S. McEachen, merchants in Douglas, Ontario, details the shipment of goods sent along the Ottawa-Parry Sound railway line from Arnprior to Douglas. It is evident that Arnprior manufacturers were using the speed of delivery (one hour) through the use of rail to their advantage, even advantageously, adding in samples of additional products for the merchants’ consideration.
The letter reads as follows:
“Dontigny & Hughton Woolen Manufactures / Arnprior, Ont., Sept 14, 1895 /Messers J + S McEachen Merchant Douglas / We ship you today the charge for Ota P.S. (Ottawa-Parry Sound) railway goods ordered. We took the liberty of putting in a piece of tweed at a low price; we neglected to send you samples of it. It is a first class line and sells well. Thanking you for your order. Yours truly / Dontigny Hughton”
